About our 'good oil'
This unique story begins with Eucalyptus kochii (pronounced “koh-chee-eye”) and Eucalyptus loxophleba lissophloia (York Gum), found only in the semi-arid interior of Western Australia. Growing in an ancient and fragile landscape, known for its unique and delicate flora, huge dry salt lakes and billion-year-old granite monoliths.
Calling WA’s Central Wheatbelt home, and extending into the Goldfields, you will find Eucalyptus kochii remnant trees. They are usually hundreds or thousands of years old! Just like the phoenix that rises from the ashes, they “re-sprout” after fire from buds protected underground in the large, woody swellings at the base of their stems, called a lignotuber.
The trees are harvested as plantation trees planted in shelterbelts along farmlands in the Central Wheatbelt. The leaves of Eucalyptus kochii and Eucalyptus loxophleba lissophloia contain the valuable and unique essential oil used solely within our product. This oil protects the tree from herbivores, and, being flammable, encourages the landscape to burn, which in turn incites the continued survival of the species.
The entire production process has a net positive impact on the surrounding environment. The valuable oil from the trees is extracted, by steaming the leaves from trees planted on farms, using water that is continually recycled throughout the production process and using processed leaves to fire the boiler. Of the 800 species of eucalypts in the world, Eucalyptus kochii contains the greatest concentration of cineole, the component which characterizes eucalyptus oil.
Our Eucalyptus Oil is as rare as it is pure, evoking a delicate fragrance that is both tantalizing and evocative to all the senses. After distillation, the oil is simply allowed to settle until it is bottled. Our oils are natural crude oils, unrefined and as much as possible untouched from the leaf to the bottle.
XO2 are proud and passionate about providing the Australian community with this beautiful oil that is; 100% natural, 100% sustainable and 100% Australian.
How to use Eucalyptus Oil Pure
Use as required.
Handy tips
• Important: This product is 100% eucalyptus oil. Being a concentrated essential oil it is not designed for personal use in this form or concentration.
• Always test first in an inconspicuous area before using any cleaning solution. Play it safe, especially when you use a product for the first time. Better to be safe than sorry. Some surfaces can be sensitive to moisture and particular chemical types.
Sustainability and production
We are passionate about sustainability, the environment and nurturing the land. We are proud of our eucalyptus oil production process and its complete sustainability.
Kochii eucalypt not only flourishes in harsh semi-arid regions, but also regrows after being harvested. Plantings re-grow (“coppice”) after harvesting for approximately two to three years before being ready to harvest again. This facilitates a sustainable supply of trees on a rotational basis whilst providing other benefits to the natural environment.
The unique oil is produced from a process with a net positive impact on the surrounding environment, making it extremely sustainable. The trees themselves protect the farmland in this ancient landscape from wind erosion and desertification, and remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
The steaming process for oil extraction is powered by burning waste leaves from previous extractions. This is a ‘closed carbon cycle’, with the subsequent regrowth drawing carbon again out of the atmosphere. Water used for steaming and for cooling is continually recycled through the production process. The species grown is actually local to the region, so a wide range of animals, insects and fungi utilise the plantings. There have been many sightings of echidna diggings!
The process
The overall process has taken many years to develop. The complexity lies in the harvesting of the trees and the widely dispersed mallee plantings.
Mature trees are harvested from an existing pool of trees. After two to three years they will re-grow and are able to be harvested again. To increase the supply of trees, new trees are planted which after four years, are ready for harvesting.
When they are not being harvested, these trees are providing other environmental benefits such as...
• Shelterbelts giving wind and sun protection for livestock and soils.
• Providing habitat for native insects, fungi, flora and fauna.
• Protecting valley floors from rising salinity.
The custom-built harvester collects the foliage with minimum impact on the trees. Harvesting re-grown trees have the added advantage of there generally being a greater ratio of leaves to wood, equating to higher oil yields.
The leaves are steam distilled powered by burning waste leaves from previous extractions. The water used for steaming and cooling is continually recycled through the production process.
Finally, the extracted oil is packaged and distributed while the trees grow naturally.
Quality
XO2 Eucalyptus oil is uniquely Australian and naturally of the finest quality. Each species of eucalypt contains a unique suite of constituents called ‘terpenes’ in the leaves – this is the eucalyptus oil, and it is different for each species. Most species have very little oil and it is never viably extracted for use, but the oil can still be smelt if the leaves are crushed.
The oil of each species, therefore, has a unique ‘perfume’ due to the particular combination of constituents that the species produces. The compound 1,8-Cineole, often known as eucalyptol, is the key desired component in most leaf oils that are extracted from eucalypts. Cineole produces the characteristic ‘eucalyptus’ smell, and also has the properties for which eucalyptus oil is renowned, such as its natural disinfectant element.
Indeed, a product can only be called “eucalyptus oil” if it contains at least 70% cineole. Most generic eucalyptus oils available in today's market are based on the terpene profile or fragrance of Eucalyptus globulus (Bluegum) but originate in other countries and with unknown original terpene sources and are blended to contain the minimum required levels of cineole.
In contrast to this, the oil of our Eucalyptus naturally contains 90-95% cineole, thus producing the highest quality of natural eucalyptus oil. Eucalyptus loxophleba lissophloia is 70–75% cineole and also a high cineole rating and has a unique sweet fragrance which in itself is quite distinctive.
There is absolutely no rectification, blending or alteration of any kind in our Eucalyptus Oil. The oil comes straight from planted trees, that are steamed and distilled. On top of the very strong cineole base, the remaining natural components, such as cymene, pinene, terpinen-4-ol and limonene, all go to contribute to the beautiful unique fragrance of the oil.
