Spa bath - Regular cleaning and treatment
1. Fill the spa bath with cold or hot water to 3cm above the jet line. Hot water is preferred but not essential.
2. Add 50mL of SpaKling to the water. For larger spas, you will need 50ml per 200 litres of water.
3. Turn jets (pump) on and run jets for 5-10 minutes. Foaming will occur which is what you want.
4. Turn the jets off and drain the bath. Rinse the bath surfaces with water after it is drained.
5. Check and clean the spa intake filter for hair and debris.
6. Wipe down the bath and surrounding areas with diluted SpaKling via spray or squirt bottle.
7. Polish the bath with a clean, dry cloth for a sparkling shine.
8. Apply SpaKling security tape seal.
Spa bath - Initial first-time flush treatment
For the initial clean and treatment, follow steps 1-4 above and then repeat the process again all the way from 1-7. Increase the chemical amount to 100ml and the treatment time to 15-20 minutes.
General Cleaning
1. Dilute at 4:1 (4 parts water and 1 part SpaKling). That's 200ml of SpaKiling into a 1L bottle. Add the water first, then add SpaKling, to avoid foam and speed up the filling process.
2. Apply directly onto a microfibre cloth, disposable wipe or the surface via the Bobby Dazzler labelled bottle with spray trigger.
3. Wipe the surface in a circular motion.
4. Turn the cloth or wipe to an unused section (or use a fresh one) for a final wipe.
Dishwashing Machine Flush Treatment (Domestic)
1. Empty the dishwasher including any existing chemicals.
2. Add 50ml of SpaKling to the chemical dispenser.
3. Run a normal wash program.
4. Clean hinges, seals and external surfaces by following the above ‘General Cleaning’ instructions.
Laundry Machine Flush Treatment (Domestic)
1. Remove all clothes from the machine.
2. Add 50ml of SpaKling into the chemical holder or machine. Run a complete warm water wash and rinse cycle.
Handy tips
• Use hot water. This will boost your cleaning performance (especially on oil, fat and grease) and speed up drying times.
• When manually filling bottles, buckets or tanks, add the water first and Bobby Dazzler last. This prevents foaming, chemical splashes and spills which will save you time!
• For cleaning spaces where hygiene is important, use our disposable cleaning wipes or paper towel instead of regular reusable cloths.
How often should a spa be treated in an accommodation or therapy environment?
The Health Department highly recommend treating your spas after every single guest checkout. This is your duty of care.
What are some handy tips for cleaning spa baths?
• Start filling the bath immediately. While it’s filling you can do your other jobs.
• Do not use more than the recommended amount of SpaKling. That’s a maximum of 100ml per 200L of spa bath water.
• Foaming does occur which floats the crap to the surface for removal. The foam can be quite disgusting so don’t freak out. Just stand back and know you have just done a great job and improved health and hygiene for your customers.
• Have a special/separate bath plug for spa treatments. Attach a chain to the plug. This is so you can remove the plug without having to put your hand and arm into the feral bath water.
• Use a faucet hose attached to the tap for the spa rinsing process in ‘Step 4.’ It is much better than filling jugs with water!
• Make sure you communicate to your guests that the spa has been treated for their health and enjoyment with the XO2® SpaKling security seal.
• Do not mix with any other chemicals.
• Always wear gloves when handling or using and cleaning chemicals.
Why clean a spa bath that already looks clean?
• For your guest’s peace of mind: When guests see a spa bath in an accommodation setting this is often what they are thinking (every XO2 team member does!)….
“Who was last in this spa?”
“Did they have any illness or open wounds?”
“When was the last time this spa was properly cleaned, sanitised and treated?”
You don’t want your guests thinking those things and questioning the quality of your establishment. That’s why it’s important to properly treat your spas and communicate your hygiene commitment effectively with the XO2® SpaKling security seal. Failure to do this will result in bad reviews and lower retention and referral rates.
• For good reviews and high referral rates: If gunk comes out the pipes when a guest is in the bath or they get sick shortly after, that’s bad news for your reputation. Guests appreciate and expect a high standard of hygiene.
• Avoiding sickness and disease… the nasties often lurk out of sight in the spa pipes. A well maintained spa provides well-earned rest, relaxation and enjoyment. If the spa is not cleaned and maintained, it can become contaminated with harmful bacteria and other organisms which can cause serious illnesses such as…
Skin, ear and eye infections.
Gastrointestinal infections.
Infections of the central nervous system.
The young, the elderly and the immunocompromised are at particular risk of contracting these diseases.
What are the most common bacteria and diseases you can catch from a spa bath?
The most commonly found bacteria and contacted diseases from spa baths are E. coli (Escherichia coli), Staphylococcus aureus infection (aka staph or golden staph), Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Legionella disease. We these nasties are left to multiply in the jets, pipes and pumps a biofilm (slimy growths of bacteria, algae and fungi) is allowed to form. Spas require diligent maintenance and frequent cleaning because warm water makes for ideal conditions for bacterial growth. Spas also generate aerosols (tiny airborne water droplets) that can be inhaled. It is really important to clean your system properly.
Is SpaKling safe for septic systems?
SpaKling is a highly effective antimicrobial. It has to be to help make the spa bath safe. In a healthy septic system, using a small amount of sanitiser that is highly diluted is usually fine. Sanitisers do affect the microbial (good bacteria) population and you need to be aware. A septic system manufacturer will always say “no sanitisers, disinfectants, antibacterial or antimicrobial products should be used”. But that advice is not always practical or safe given the dangers of a poorly maintained spa bath.
